Parents: This week we are learning how God separated light from dark, and how He calls us to live lives separate from the world.
Sometimes, obeying God can be painful, but it’s always worth it. When Miss Nikki was a young woman in high school, she was very popular. Just about every club she joined, she became the president. God gifted her with leadership and a kind heart, which made others want to follow her. She had many friends, but what she discovered was that not all of her friends were good for her.
Many of them did things that were harmful and wrong, and Miss Nikki could see herself being drawn into their bad lifestyle. God even gave her a dream that she was on a bridge being pulled down, to a point where she could fall off the bridge. Still, leaving friends is not easy because loneliness can be painful.
Then the Lord clearly spoke to her through Scripture. She read in Matthew 18:8, “If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It would be better to enter the kingdom of heaven with only one hand than to go into hell with two hands.” She knew what God was saying. Her friends were important to her, but it was time to cut off those bad relationships.
The next day, she did not interact with any of these friends. She did the same thing the next day, and the next and so on for the rest of the school year. In time, these old friends made fun of her behind her back. It was lonely and hard, but she learned that the Lord always rewards obedience.
Throughout that year, she had one solid friend. This friend was true and trustworthy, and they remained the best of friends into adulthood. The verse proved true in Proverbs 17:17, “A friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes.” The following school year was her last in high school. She started an organization called Big Sibs that focused on helping younger high school students that were troubled. She discovered she had a passion and a gift for helping troubled young people, and that passion has directed much of her life. If she had kept those bad friends, she never would have discovered this gift.
To top it all off, the entire school voted for her to be the homecoming queen that year. She was more popular than she had ever been. She knew God was honoring her for obeying His command to separate from ungodly friendships. Just as God separated light from dark, we must remain separate from the dark things of this world. That doesn’t mean we hide somewhere in a cave where no one can find us, but it does mean that as we go out into the world to share the love of Jesus, we must keep our hearts and minds pure because we have the Holy Spirit living inside!
